...

My second favorite. Duchess had Tris' back, and anyone else who needed her. She soaked up endless rivers of teenage tears, wrestled with lonely kids and made my Dad laugh after a hard day's work. She was my mom's baby on the nights we went out, no longer her babies, to go on dates and take on new responsibilities. She was a referee after school, shoving her bulk between my brother and me if the bickering got too loud. She was stubborn, and she was forgiving. She chewed the remote and mended shredded hearts. She tormented my cat and checked on me before she went to bed. She was maddening and loving and goofy and intuitive. She was just a dog, and yet she has left behind a hole nothing has filled since. She was our Newf.
