...

When we got Duchess, we already had a dog, a mix of terrier types named Rascal. I can trace my vague dislike of terrier breeds all the way back to this dog. My dad got her when she was just a tiny pup one Christmas, for my mom. Rascal was my mom's dog. She was cute for a while, but when she hit about 3 or 4 years old, she got cranky. And I am being very, very polite because my poor mom really loved this little dog. Duchess was very alpha, right from the beginning, but for a short while, they got along. I love this picture because it's almost as if Rascal is saying "Come on, babe, let's go paint the town..." and Duchess has that sweet little jaunt and you can just see them getting into so much mischief.

There was a family on the same street as my school, and whenever we walked Rascal, the kids would come out and make a fuss over her. They were nuts about that little dog, and she was always so calm and sweet with them! When we realized we could not keep her due to her growing aggression towards Duchess (and the fact that she would never win a fight with Duchess), we offered her to that family. I hope she had a wonderful life.

Every living being deserves a chance. When Rascal's chances ran out, I thank God there was another family waiting for her with open arms. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone out there who has ever adopted a companion animal from a shelter or took a friend's pet when they could no longer care for them. You don't know how much it means to us, the people who have to give them up.
