...

My younger brother Donnie and Duchess in June or July of 1988. We had been told to provide a place for Duchess to get wet and cool off in the heat of a Saskatchewan summer, and we knew that Newfs were supposed to love water, so we filled a little swimming pool with ice cold water on a hot summer day (can you see where this is going?) and plunked her into it. Never before and never since have I seen a Newf move so fast. She was out of that pool and under the deck faster than we ever would have believed. It took a while for her to get over that trauma. Lesson learned? Let the puppy discover water on her own. Which means she will likely join you in the bathtub a couple of times before she ventures into the great unknown of the kiddie pool.
P.S. She did grow to love the pool... eventually. :o)
